De Lambikstoempers, the premier lambic beer appreciation and promotion club in Belgium’s Payottenland, Belgium’s lambic country, are holding their fifteenth annual “Dag van de Oude Geuze” or Day of the Old Geuze, the weekend of October 16-17. The venue is the Streekproductencentrum (Regional Products Center) in Halle, eight miles south of Brussels. Halle is linked by frequent trains from Brussels, and the journey only takes about 20 minutes. You could base yourself in Brussels, or even a hotel or B&B in Halle.
I attended the “Days of the Oude Geuze” in 2013 and 2017. This event usually happens in November, but was moved up to October due to the “Maand van de Lambiek” or Month of the Lambic, that is being organized by the Tourist Office of the Province of Flemish Brabant. The month started on September 18, and will end on October 17 with this final event.
Johan Deknopper, Project Manager for the Payottenland for Tourism for the Province of Flemish Brabant (Vlaamse Brabant) had this to say: “We have helped to organize and promote a whole series of events during this month of lambic. There were open door days at lambic makers, beer festivals, beer tastings, cycling and walking events, and much more. We look forward to the Days of the Oude Geuze, and to also organizing this event again next year.”
From the Lambikstoempers website:
“Once again, we will provide an extensive sample of spontaneous fermentation beers. Beers from the following breweries / blenders can be tasted:
De Cam (Gooik)
Den Herberg (Buizingen)
De Troch (Wambeek)
3 Fonteinen (Beersel)
Lambiek Fabriek (Ruisbroek)
Mort Subite (Kobbegem)
Oud Beersel (Beersel)
To the delight of many beer lovers, we only serve the real lambic beers. Namely this one where 100% lambic is still used to obtain OLD GUEUZE & OLD KRIEK and where use is made of the yeast cells that can be found in the air of the Zenne valley. We are therefore proud that we can offer a complete overview of the range of the remaining lambic breweries and blenders in the region at one location.?
The list above should be any lambic lover’s dream! Even many of the beers from the newest lambic makers will be on offer, such as Boerenerf, Den Herberg, Lambiek Fabriek, and Sako.
Here is the beerlist for the festival.
What a great list! I wish I could be in Belgium for this premier lambic event.
De Lambikstoempers also holds several other great lambic events throughout the year, such as the “Weekend of Beer” which is held at De Lambiek, the lambic beer visitor’s center, at the end of August. See this previous article for info about that event. and also this previous article.
