Late 1960’s De Troch Oude Gueuze

Vintage/aged beers are often a hit or miss proposition, but one thing is for sure: dry, tart lambic brews with refermenation in the bottle stand a good chance of aging well.

A late 1960’s Brouwerij De Troch Oude Gueuze was one of the revelations of last November’s trip to Belgium. I had never tasted a De Troch brew this old, so had no idea what to expect. What I found was that this brew was sublime: bone dry, tart, and complex. It left me wanting more. Much more. I was reminded most closely of Girardin Oude Gueuze and Tilquin Oude Gueuze, which are both superb beers.

The back of the bottle says: "Beer from spontaneous fermentation with 40% wheat."

Yes, I was surprised. But, that can happen when you are tasting vintage brews.

Thanks to Belgian friend, journalist/photographer Danny Van Tricht for sharing. (P.S. don’t bother asking Danny if he has any more. I already did.)
